Diana Lee - Artist and Educator
Diana Lee is a longtime resident of Cape Cod. She spent her childhood summers at her family's cottage in North Falmouth and has lived the majority of her adult life in East Falmouth. Her landscape and seascape paintings have evolved from her love of the ocean and beach. In 1978, after completing four years of studio art, Diana received a diploma from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her mentors, Bill Flynn and Jack Clift, were strong influences in her development as an artist. Both teachers helped in refining her artistic abilities and philosophy through graphics and drawing. She found a freedom and confidence in drawing that gave her the knowledge and skill to work flexibly with a variety of formats including the figure and still life. Diana also pursued the disciplines of sculpture and painting at the Museum School, with painting remaining as her primary interest and career.
After raising her family of four children, Diana returned to school in 2000. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the spring of 2003. She teaches while continuing to paint in her studio in Falmouth.
Diana enjoys using bright bold colors in her compositions and responds to her subject matter by what she sees and feels. She uses the brush stroke and palette knife to show movement and action in her painting and to evoke emotion. She works in oils, acrylics and pastels.
Diana has received numerous awards and recognition including being selected as an emerging artist by Cape Cod Life Magazine in 1996 and the magazine’s Arts Edition in June 2012. She also was included in an article in the Cape Women magazine in 1999. She has taught classes and workshops at both the Falmouth Artist Guild and the Cape Cod Art Association.
Artist Statement
As an artist, I enjoy two worlds of artistic expression. First, as a teacher, I help guiding students to develop artistically. It gives me satisfaction that I am helping people who are interested in art and I am rewarded with a sense of purpose and meaning. Teaching is a way of giving back to the community for the generosity and kindness that was shown to me when I was a student by my art teachers. Now I pass along the candle of inspiration and creativity to my students.
My other world of art and creativity is being a landscape and still life painter. I am happiest and in harmony with the world around me when I am painting. I paint boldly using bright, rich colors in my landscape and still life compositions. I like working with large panoramic scenes as well as painting the figure in my landscapes. I respond to my subject matter by what I feel and see emotionally. I enjoy plein air painting and being close to nature. In inclement or cold weather, I paint in my studio working from still life, sketches and photographs. I have three mediums that I express my art in: oils, acrylics and pastels. The different mediums allow me more flexibility to choose the best approach for each subject I approach. I also make my own wood frames and extend my still life compositions onto the frames creating a sense of continuation of the painting. Some of my favorite artists include Picasso, Bonnard, Van Gogh and Matisse.
